Suzhou

Our first stop today was at a silk spinning factory. We learned about the process of getting the silk and making fabric. Silkworms are fed mulberry leaves and eat their way to 10,000 times their weight. They then spin their cocoon which looks like a little white fluffy ball. The cocoons are steamed or heated, then placed in water to loosen the silk thread filament. Filaments from between four and eight cocoons are twisted together to make one silk thread that can be as long as 1,600 yards.
