Agra--Taj Mahal

Noopur's family had some sort of VIP access :) We got to cut in front of everyone in line to get in and then we had a guide and a guard escorting us around. They gave us covers for our shoes so we didn't have to walk around barefoot on the HOT marble. Oh yeah, Agra was HOT. I tried to hide in the shade when possible so I wouldn't melt. Facts about the Taj? It's the most extravagant monument ever built for love. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial for his 2nd wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their 14th child (1631). Her death left the emperor so heartbroken that his hair was said to have turned grey overnight. Construction began the same year as her death and took 22 years to build. The building is covered with pietra dora (marble inlay work) which is made up of thousands of semiprecious stones. We had to park our car and take an electric bus to the monument. All pollution-emitting vehicles are prohibited around the monument. In the last few years acid rain has started discoloring the marble.
