More facts... Areas around the doorways are inscribed with verses from the Koran. The Taj is raised on a marble platform, which is genius b/c the background is all sky. The minarets around the Taj lean slightly outward so in case of an earthquake, they will fall away from the Taj. Below the main dome (first set of photos, middle) is the Cenotaph of Mumtaz Mahal. This is a false tomb surrounded by a perforated marble screen inlaid with 43 different types of semiprecious stones. Her actual tomb is under the false tomb. Visitors used to be able to visit it, but it's now closed off to the public.
